In this Advent season, I pray that I travel
the path of self-giving and relentless hope.
May I be lovingly intent and generous
with each and every person I meet,
recalling how Mary made the trip
to spend time with pregnant Elizabeth.
Like Mary and Joseph, doing their duty
in taking an arduous, undesired journey,
may I draw on my inner strength and faith
to meet daily duties and responsibilities.
Remembering how Mary and Joseph
could not locate anywhere to stay,
may the privileges of my residence
lead me to care for unhoused persons.
As the Magi intently followed the star,
may I choose to be aware of what stirs
within the inner sanctum of my being,
leading me to the place of your love.
In a spirit of the watchful shepherds
who leaned toward glory-filled music,
may I recognize your light-filled love
in the cheerful events of this season.
When I hear disparaging words spoken
about the refugees in my country,
may I remember how Mary and Joseph
became refugees to protect their Child.
During my travels throughout Advent,
I open my inner radar to you, Holy One.
I will watch closely for how I encounter
you in unexpected people and events.
When the feast of Christmas arrives,
may my awareness of your presence
have been awakened and refreshed,
my heart having traveled within yours.
