“…and laughter passes over the earth”
(The Heart of God, Rabindranath Tagore)
Echoes of laughter spill through creation,
carrying their glad sounds in squeaking mice,
the giddy neighs of a yearling in the pasture,
and the cawing of happy crows on the roof.
The brook giggles when carried between stones,
pine branches laugh as summer breezes lift them;
glaciers guffaw in spite of winter’s icy breath
while sea turtles chuckle at the gift of newborns.
Earthworms wiggle through compost with joy,
spider monkeys leap happily from tree to tree,
rice paddies breathe easy sighs of gladness
while the oceans splash their dancing waves.
Everywhere laughter fills land, sea and sky,
a steady mirth moves through forest and city.
Can you hear it? Do you join in its voice?
If not, what inner barrier silences your ears?
