About the schedule:
While I do have conferences and retreats scheduled for this year, I continue to focus on writing and on personal renewal. This is essential for me if I am to write with depth and quality. I greatly appreciate the invitations that come my way but I simply cannot accept very many of them due to the time I need for writing. In the meantime, I hope that I will meet many of you who visit this web site when you come to one of the following events in 2012.
                                                                                                       -  Joyce Rupp

Boundless Compassion:
Living the Heart of the Gospel

For Jesus, compassion was the central quality of God
and the central moral quality of a life
centered in God.   ~ Marcus Borg

Compassion can change a heart, change a life, change a world. Compassionate presence involves more than extending a hand or a heart to another. To become intrinsically compassionate, one needs self-awareness and a wholehearted entry into the journey of personal transformation.  This weekend offers participants an invitation to learn about the breadth and depth of compassion, viewing it from various sources such as science and psychology, but with a special focus on the gospel passages related to this essential teaching and lived reality of Christ.   (Please bring a Bible and a notebook or journal.)

The Institute of
Compassionate Presence

Compassion can change a heart, change a life, change a world. Joyce Rupp explores the depths of this vital quality from many dimensions, including science, medicine, theology, spirituality, sociology, and psychology. She invites participants to ponder their personal and professional experiences of compassion, to reenergize their ability to offer loving kindness, and to go forth with a renewed commitment to be a compassionate presence for one’s self and for those who are in the midst of pain and struggle.

This week offers an intensive format in which Joyce Rupp and the participants explore both the theoretical and experiential dynamics of compassionate presence.  The Institute includes topics and components that are a part of a more extensive eight month program held in Nebraska. Content of the week includes an in-depth view of compassion, relational skills, self-care, loss and suffering, compassion in the workplace, and other associated topics.

The ICP utilizes input (conferences, DVDs, articles) and participative processes (quiet reflection, various dialogue formats, music, etc.) each of which contributes to the integration of compassion in the participants’ lives.  This Institute is open to all persons of any religious affiliation or personal belief system.

The Liberated Heart:
Becoming Who We Really Are

Thomas Merton writes that when we find our true self we find God and when we find God we find our true self. This “finding” is a life-long process of transformation. Authentic spiritual liberation leads to greater compassion and connection with the world beyond self. We are each called to be in the process of personal transformation, yet becoming our true selves is no easy process. We get caught in busyness and non-awareness. We stumble over our doubts and get lost in our confusions. As we seek to be spiritually liberated we meet up with our weaknesses, difficulties, and unexpected turns on the road.  What do we do with these barriers and bumps on the path? How do we embrace our gifts?  What do we need in order to have a healthy and helpful approach to spiritual freedom? Joyce Rupp explores the hindrances and the gifts on the journey of becoming inwardly free.  She provides both theory and practical suggestions from a variety of spiritual traditions as she presents the process of becoming a more liberated and whole human being.
