Morning Pre-Lenten Retreat

Return With All Your Heart

In undertaking a spiritual life, what matters is simple:   we must make certain that our path is connected with our heart.      - Jack Kornfield

Lent is a time of re-turning to what gives our spiritual life meaning, energy and vitality. Human hearts can easily become distracted or disoriented in the busyness and concerns of daily life. This retreat extends an invitation to re-enter the heart of the Gospel and one’s own heart. It is a time to rediscover the treasures that lie within and to empty out the clutter that has collected there. In this retreat participants will be invited to deepen and expand their relationship with God, the Great Love, who is an enduring presence of faithfulness.

Retreat includes opening and closing rituals, conferences by Joyce Rupp, and quiet reflection time.

Open the Door: A Journey to the True Self

This retreat day is based on Joyce Rupp’s book of the same title, which offers both inspiration and encouragement for personal growth. Opening the “door” is a way of speaking about an invisible passageway through which we enter the endless territory of beauty and truth secluded in our interior world. This symbolic door of the heart bears a similarity to physical doors in that it, too, opens and closes. Our heart-door opens inward to the deepest, truest part of who we are. There we find the inherent goodness seeded in us at our birth. The door then opens outward to the world where we bring this giftedness and share it with others.

One of our greatest treasures is the wonder of divinity residing in us. In our busy world we often get caught in the whirlwind and miss this beauty of our truest, deepest self. This day is a time to slow down, to turn to our Divine Guide and let ourselves be led within to the place where much is yet to be revealed. It is a creative venture, an invitation to stretch and grow, a time to become clearer about our purpose in life. The retreat includes creative prayer experiences, conferences, quiet time and small group dialogue.

The Institute of
Compassionate Presence

Compassion can change a heart, change a life, change a world. Joyce Rupp explores the depths of this vital quality from many dimensions, including science, medicine, theology, spirituality, sociology, and psychology. She invites participants to ponder their personal and professional experiences of compassion, to reenergize their ability to offer loving kindness, and to go forth with a renewed commitment to be a compassionate presence for one’s self and for those who are in the midst of pain and struggle.

This week offers an intensive format in which Joyce Rupp and the participants explore both the theoretical and experiential dynamics of compassionate presence.  The Institute includes topics and components that are a part of a more extensive eight month program held in Nebraska. Content of the week includes an in-depth view of compassion, relational skills, self-care, loss and suffering, compassion in the workplace, and other associated topics.

The ICP utilizes input (conferences, DVDs, articles) and participative processes (quiet reflection, various dialogue formats, music, etc.) each of which contributes to the integration of compassion in the participants’ lives.  This Institute is open to all persons of any religious affiliation or personal belief system.

May 21 - 22
Belleville, Illinois

National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows
Friday Evening / Saturday

Friday Evening:  Listening With the Ear of the Heart

Listening with the ear of the heart is a tremendously beneficial way to approach life. This Christ-like quality generates compassion and care. This method of listening allows us to reach inside to the place where the Source of greatest love resides. When we listen with the ear of the heart, we hear the deeper, more vulnerable and true part of ourselves and others. This listening frees us to be attentive with nonjudgmental openness and kindness. It is the path to healing and wholeness that continually cries out for attention in the human spirit. Each person longs to be heard and understood in this way.

When Joyce Rupp reflects on “listening with the ear of the heart” she presents a wide diversity of wisdom gleaned from ancient legends, scripture, present life, and various spiritual traditions. She connects these with stirring accounts from her own journey and those whom she has companioned in her experience as a spiritual director and a hospice volunteer.

Saturday : Becoming a Compassionate Presence

A deeper and clearer look at compassion teaches and inspires us to accompany the hurting ones of our personal lives, our ministry, and our world with loving kindness. Compassion also invites us to give ourselves understanding and acceptance when we are in the midst of pain and struggle.  Joyce Rupp will offer a view of compassion from Christianity, as well as other varied spiritual and literary sources, and her own personal experiences. She will also give suggestions for how to live and pray in a compassionate way.

This retreat provides inspiration and encouragement. It offers hope and comfort to those who are hurting. The retreat also seeks to spiritually re-energize caregivers and all those who accompany others who experience life’s difficulties. The retreat will include conferences, creative rituals, quiet reflective time, and opportunities for dialogue.

Friday evening - Sunday noon

Becoming A Compassionate Presence

Compassion can change a heart, change a life, change a world.  True compassionate presence involves more than extending a hand or a heart to another. To become intrinsically compassionate, one needs self-awareness and a wholehearted entrance into the journey of personal transformation.

In this weekend retreat, Joyce Rupp will explore the vital quality of compassion from various dimensions, including science, medicine, theology, spirituality, sociology, and psychology. She will invite participants to ponder their personal experiences of compassion. They will be encouraged to open the door of their heart to both themselves and others in order to move more fully  into the lived reality of being a compassionate presence within the world.

This retreat  will include conferences by Joyce, quiet reflective times, small and large group dialogue, and creative prayer experiences. Please bring a journal or notebook, and a symbol of what compassionate presence means to you.

Leadership Conference

Keynote: Compassionate Presence

Those in church leadership are constantly called upon to be a compassionate presence for others. This quality is at the heart of the Gospel. It is a central teaching and the lived reality of Jesus. Joyce Rupp explores the depths of compassion from many dimensions, including science, medicine, theology, spirituality, sociology, and psychology. Participants are invited to ponder their personal experiences of compassion, to affirm and strengthen their self-compassion, and to be reenergized in their efforts to be a compassionate presence in both personal and ministerial lives.

Workshop: Growing in Faith Through Difficult Times

Each of us experiences the journey of life-death-life repeatedly. This process, a mirror of the paschal mystery of Christ, is at the heart of our spiritual transformation. How do we embrace the dying parts of this cycle that precede promised growth? How do we enter into the darkness, trust in the unfolding of newness, and keep hope in times of discouragement and distress? Who and what holds and supports us until we emerge from the chrysalis of darkness into ever fuller liberating light? In this workshop, Joyce Rupp looks at these questions through the lens of the paschal mystery and encourages participants to approach difficult times as opportunities for birthing fuller love, stronger faith, and deeper peace.
