Joyce Rupp's 2008 Schedule

Click on the date or place in the table below for more information about the event. You may also scroll down to see the entire schedule.

About the schedule:
While I do have conferences and retreats scheduled for this year, I continue to focus on writing and on personal renewal. This is essential for me if I am to write with depth and quality. I greatly appreciate the invitations that come my way but I simply cannot accept very many of them due to the time I need for writing. In the meantime, I hope that I will meet many of you who visit this web site when you come to one of the following events in 2008.
                                                                                                       -  Joyce Rupp

“Kindling the Flame of Compassion
St Mary's College in Ponsonby

The compassionate heart is one that is in deep communion with all of creation. Compassion includes awareness, attitude, and action.  This central quality of Christ weds us to each part of the cosmos and challenges us to enter deeply into the suffering of this realm. A deeper and clearer look at compassion teaches and inspires us in accompanying the hurting ones of our personal lives and of our world.  Compassion also teaches us how to give ourselves understanding and kindness when we are in the midst of pain and struggle.

Joyce will offer a view of compassion from Christianity and other spiritual and literary sources, as well as her own lived experience. This day will provide inspiration and encouragement. It will offer hope and comfort to those who are hurting. The retreat will also seek to spiritually re-energize those who accompany others who experience life’s difficulties. This day will also nudge all participants to be active sparks of compassion.

A Retreat Day
“Open the Door, A Journey to the True Self

This retreat, based on Joyce Rupp’s latest book, (due out in late August) offers both inspiration and encouragement for personal growth. Opening the “door” is a way of speaking about an invisible passageway through which we enter the endless territory of beauty and truth secluded in our interior world. This symbolic door of the heart bears a similarity to physical doors in that it, too, opens and closes. Our heart-door opens inward to the deepest, truest part of who we are. There we find the inherent goodness seeded in us at our birth. The door then opens outward to the world where we bring this giftedness and share it with others. The retreat day will include conferences on the journey of discovering one’s authentic self, quiet times of reflection, small group dialogue, and creative prayer experiences.

Open the Door”
Retreat Day

Our truest self cries out to be known and integrated into the way we live. The “door” of the heart is a way of speaking about an entry to the deeper self. The Sufi poet, Rumi, describes this soul-space as a magnificent cathedral. St. Teresa of Avila notes, “I can find nothing with which to compare the great beauty of a soul…we can hardly form any conception of the soul’s great dignity and beauty.” The central purpose for opening the door inward is to discover and claim authenticity so this goodness and union with the divine can be expressed in every part of our life.

Anytime we decrease our hurrying and rushing or deliberately choose to stop and consider what is happening (or not happening) in our life, we prepare ourselves to open the door of our heart. Come and join in this “slowing down” day led by Joyce Rupp. It is based on her forthcoming book of the same title. The retreat includes conferences, creative ritual, quiet reflective times, and opportunities for group dialogue. Silence that nourishes growth and deepens wisdom will be honored and respected during this day.

St. Pius X parish
Pre-Advent Retreat
Morning only

“Open the Door, Welcome Christ

"O Key of David, opening the gates of God's eternal Kingdom, free the prisoners of darkness!"  (O Antiphon for December 20)

Each of us has a Sacred Door which allows us entrance into the dwelling place of God. Like Mary of Nazareth, who opened her heart to be the dwelling place of Jesus, so each of us is invited to open the door of our heart and welcome the Holy One with fuller faith and greater love. This retreat is an invitation to seek and re-discover this mystery of Emmanuel, God-with-us, as we delve deeper into the Advent season. During this retreat we will open the door of our heart inward in order to look within our deepest self, to discover the Treasure abiding there.  We will also open the door of our heart outward in order to look beyond our self,  to be more ready to welcome those in whom God dwells.

The retreat will include a conference by Joyce Rupp, creative ritual, quiet reflective time, and an opportunity for group dialogue.
