About the schedule:
While I do have conferences and retreats scheduled for this year, I continue to focus on writing and on personal renewal. This is essential for me if I am to write with depth and quality. I greatly appreciate the invitations that come my way but I simply cannot accept very many of them due to the time I need for writing. In the meantime, I hope that I will meet many of you who visit this web site when you come to one of the following events in 2007.

Embrace the Pascal Mystery
Lenten Retreat

Each of us experiences the journey of life-death-life repeatedly. This process, which is a mirror of the passion–death-resurrection of Christ, is the central pattern of our spiritual transformation. This paschal mystery is at the heart of our life experiences and offers many opportunities for spiritual growth.  How do we embrace the dying parts of this cycle that precede the promised growth? How do we enter into the darkness, trust in the unfolding of newness, and keep hope in times of discouragement and distress? Who and what holds and supports us until we emerge from the chrysalis of darkness into ever fuller liberating light? As Joyce Rupp facilitates this retreat she will reflect on these questions. She will encourage participants to enter into the paschal mystery through creative rituals, conferences, quiet reflective times and group dialogue. This retreat offers participants a day of restored confidence and a renewed sense of dedication to spiritual growth and union with God.

Talk 1-25:  Dusting Off Our Prayer

Does your prayer life need to be re-vitalized?  Looking for refreshing ways to enter into relationship with the Divine? Seeking to reconnect with God in the midst of your busy life? Wondering how to pray for self and others? This is a workshop for anyone desiring to refresh one’s personal prayer life or seeking innovative prayer forms to bring to one’s ministerial experience.  In the spirit of her book, Out of the Ordinary (a book of creative prayers) Joyce Rupp will not only offer her current insights about the theory and expression of prayer, she will describe creative ways to pray and lead the group through many of these suggestions.  Come prepared to pray at this workshop on prayer. Leave with new possibilities for yourself and for those in your ministry.

Talk 7-21 : Discovering Our Hidden Treasure

We all have many jewels deep inside that are waiting to be discovered. One of our greatest treasures is the wonder of divinity residing in us. This God-ness (Goodness) activates and encourages our virtues and talents, urging them to come alive. In our busy world we often get caught in the whirlwind and miss this beauty of our truest, deepest self. This workshop is based on the parables of the pearl of great price and the treasure hidden in the field. Joyce Rupp’s reflections and suggestions will help restore confidence not only in your personal talents and self-worth, they will motivate you to enthusiastically re-enter your ministry with stronger belief in your inner resources. This workshop will also inspire those in leadership to enable others to believe in and activate their personal abilities. It is time to recognize, accept, and celebrate the marvelous human beings that we are.

Keynote Speaker

Regaining Our Balance
in a Yang-Oriented Culture

The Chinese symbol of yin-yang wisely portrays the two opposing spiritual poles of life within a circle of perfect balance. The Chinese symbol of yin-yang wisely portrays the two opposing spiritual poles of life within a circle of perfect balance. Humanity continually swings between these two equally necessary energies of “yin (being) and yang (doing).”  Women can easily get stuck in the yang energy of “doing” because of the western world’s forceful emphasis on proven productivity, constant busyness, frenetic noise, and unyielding stress. Spiritual growth and wholeness is nurtured by continual attentiveness to the tension that comes from unbalanced living amid such polarities as: self-care and other-care, sorrow and joy, inner darkness and light, search and discovery, introvertism and extrovertism, emptiness and fullness, striving and surrender. Joyce Rupp will explore these energies and suggest ways to recognize and integrate these opposing polarities in a way that leads toward greater inner freedom and a fuller compassionate presence in our world.

This international gathering of women will honor the unspoken wisdom in a woman's heart, encouraging women to think differently in order to effect change in the world.

All vendors will sell goods created by, and to support, women in developing countries or women in need.  Women of all ages, creeds, and nationalities are invited.

Other Keynotes:  Dr. Rachel Remen,
Paula D'Arcy, author Ann Turner

Talk 1:  Recognizing Our Hidden Treasures

There is a jewel of divinity in the heart of every person. There are many gifts within each one that are meant to be discovered and shared.  In the busyness and pressures of everyday life the inner treasures are often forgotten, The beauty and bounty in the storehouse of our potential can be easily missed. Joyce will draw us to those treasures by helping us look into our life experiences of both joy and sorrow.  She will have us take a fresh look at our awareness (or lack of it) and encourage us to be reacquainted with what grounds us both spiritually and psychologically in our personal and professional lives.

Talk 2: Reclaiming and Sharing our Inner Treasures

How do we go about rediscovering and reclaiming the goodness (the God-ness) within us?  How do we re-inspire and re-invigorate our loving service to others?  What motivates us to go seeking what we may have lost or have set aside for too long?  Through stories of both life and literature Joyce will describe the journey of finding the hidden treasure.  This reclaiming will include looking at how we can create room in our lives for what truly counts.

The Liberated Heart

Thomas Merton writes that when we find our true self we find God and when we find God we find our true self. This finding is a life-long process of transformation. Authentic personal liberation leads always to greater compassion and connection with the world beyond self. We are each called to be in the process of personal transformation, yet becoming our true selves is no easy process. We get caught in busyness and non-awareness. We stumble over our doubts and get lost in our confusions. As we seek to be spiritually liberated we meet up with our own weaknesses, difficulties and unexpected turns on the road.  What do we do with these barriers and bumps on the path? How do we embrace our gifts?  What do we need in order to have a healthy and helpful approach to spiritual freedom? Joyce Rupp will explore the hindrances and the gifts on the journey of becoming spiritually free.  She will  provide both theory and practical suggestions from a variety of spiritual traditions to explore the process of becoming a more liberated and whole human being.

Discovering our Hidden Treasures

We all have so many jewels deep within us that are waiting to be discovered. One of our greatest treasures is the wonder of divinity residing in us. This God-ness (Goodness) activates and encourages our virtues and talents, urging them to come alive. In our busy world we often get caught in the whirlwind and miss this beauty of our truest, deepest self. This retreat is a time to slow down, to turn to our Divine Guide and let ourselves be led within to the place where much is yet to be revealed. It is a creative venture, an invitation to stretch and grow. It is a time to become clearer about our purpose in life and to gain greater inner freedom.

The retreat will include creative ritual and prayer, conferences by Joyce Rupp, time for quiet reflection and sharing in small groups. Most of all, the retreat will be about recognizing, accepting and celebrating the marvelous human beings that we are.

Struggling for Balance:
Living out of a Vibrant Spirit

How does it happen that most of our attention is given to our outer journey of family life, work, and a zillion duties of the day?  When do we pause to listen to our inner stirrings, to the part that gives us meaning, purpose and direction?  What causes us to forget that deep yearning for the divine which resides at the heart of who we are?  Joyce Rupp will address these questions and more as she reflects upon our external and internal worlds by sharing her insights and experience. Be prepared to hear story, poetry, and song in the midst of her conference.  Joyce will also offer practical ways to be more attentive to the inner journey. This evening will include an opening and closing prayer experience.

December 1

St. Thomas Catholic Women's Guild
Advent Retreat

Open the Door, Welcome Christ

"O Key of David, opening the gates of God's eternal Kingdom, free the prisoners of darkness!"  (O Antiphon for December 20)

Each of us has a Sacred Door which allows us entrance into the dwelling place of God. Like Mary of Nazareth, who opened her heart to be the dwelling place of Jesus, so each of us is invited to open the door of our heart and welcome the Holy One with fuller faith and greater love. This retreat is an invitation to seek and re-discover this mystery of Emmanuel, God-with-us, as we delve deeper into the Advent season. During this retreat we will open the door of our heart inward in order to look within our deepest self, to discover the treasures abiding there.  We will also open the door of our heart outward in order to look beyond our self,  to be more ready to welcome those in whom God dwells and sends into our midst.

The retreat will include conferences by Joyce Rupp,
creative ritual, quiet reflective times, and
opportunities for group dialogue.
