I greatly appreciate the invitations that come my way but I simply cannot accept very many of them due to the time I need for writing. In the meantime, I hope that I will meet many of you who visit this web site when you come to one of the following events in 2006.

The Circle of Life:
Journeying Through our Spiritual Seasons

Friday evening, Saturday morning

As we listen carefully and closely to each of Earth’s seasons we will discover wisdom and teaching for our spiritual growth. This seasonal circle of life is a metaphor for the Christian journey of transformation. The flow of the seasons pulses through both our inner and outer lives, moving in a circular process of life-death-life. Every step in the circle of life is an invitation to discover more of our true self. Each of these movements calls us repeatedly to enter into and accept the seasonal periods of our lives. As we journey through these patterns of the year and of the heart, each step offers us a graced opportunity for further development and maturity.

The Liberated Heart
Three Evening Retreat
7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Thomas Merton writes that when we find our true self we find God and when we find God we find our true self. This finding is a life-long process of transformation. Authentic personal liberation leads always to greater compassion and connection with the world beyond self. We are each called to be in the process of personal transformation, yet becoming our true selves is no easy process. We get caught in busyness and non-awareness. We stumble over our doubts and get lost in our confusions. As we seek to be spiritually liberated we meet up with our own weaknesses, difficulties and unexpected turns on the road. What do we do with these barriers and bumps on the path? How do we embrace our gifts? What do we need in order to have a healthy and helpful approach to spiritual freedom? Joyce Rupp will explore the hindrances and the gifts on the journey of becoming spiritually free. She will provide both theory and practical suggestions from a variety of spiritual traditions to explore the process of becoming a more liberated and whole human being.

Embracing the Paschal Mystery
Lenten Retreat Day

Each of us experiences the journey of life-death-life repeatedly. This process, a mirror of the paschal mystery of Christ, is at the heart of our own spiritual transformation. How do we embrace the dying parts of this cycle that precede promised growth? How do we enter into the darkness, trust in the unfolding of newness, and keep hope in times of discouragement and distress? Who and what holds and supports us until we emerge from the chrysalis of darkness into ever fuller liberating light? As Joyce Rupp facilitates this Lenten retreat day she will reflect on these questions. Through creative rituals, conferences, quiet reflective times and group dialogue she will encourage participants to enter into the heart of the paschal mystery with confidence and a renewed sense of dedication to spiritual growth..

Befriend the Darkness
Welcome the Light

Retreat Day
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Moments of darkness come in many forms. Most of us view darkness as an enemy to be avoided. What if we befriended our darkness and welcomed it as a significant source of personal growth? Joyce Rupp will present the experience of darkness as something that can be our teacher and a source of wisdom. She invites participants to identify their darkness, befriend the struggles, welcome the little pieces of light that give courage and strength, and claim the value of living with the tension of light and darkness in one's life. Types of darkness and practical helps for living through the darkness, as well as personal accounts from her own life and those she has mentored, will be shared.

Friday - "Welcoming Diversity
with the Heart of Christ"

It is on the surface of life that humans appear different from one another. On going deeper, the opposite is true: we discover we are more alike than different. Many of the same hopes and longings, cares and concerns, dreams and fears, reside within us. It is when we see with our inner eye, the eye of faith, the eye of the heart, that we are able to bridge what may seem insurmountable. It is this view that gives us guidance and courage to approach and enter into beliefs, attitudes, and situations that would otherwise keep us apart. When we see with our inner eye we are led to draw near to others with a heart that reflects divine kindness. We are then able to cross the bridge of life and enter into fruitful communication and compassionate care.

Images of Sophia

Sophia (the Greek word for Wisdom) is presented as personal and as feminine in the Jewish scriptures. Although there are only four persons who have more written about them in these scriptures, Sophia is not well known by many readers of the Bible. The Wisdom Literature of the Bible presents this Enduring Radiance as a faithful companion who guides and influences each one’s life. Joyce Rupp has studied Sophia and prayed to her daily for many years. She has written two books on Sophia: the Star in My Heart and Prayers to Sophia. Joyce’s presentations extend an invitation to meet Sophia and discover her qualities. She also offers suggestions and opportunities for participants to ponder how Sophia is alive and active within each one’s spirit and experience.

Topics for the three days:

Day 1 -  Discovering Sophia: A Lost Biblical Treasure
(Biblical references, historical perspectives from various traditions, qualities of Sophia)

Day 2 -  Sophia: Source of Inner Wisdom
(Development of the scriptural references in relation to Sophia’s manifestation in our life)

Day 3 -  Sophia: Catalyst for Spiritual Transformation
